“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” topped the weekend box office with an estimated $56 million in North American ticket sales.
The fourth installment in the action comedy series starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is seen as a test of Smith’s value as a star. In 2022, he was banned from the Academy Awards for 10 years as punishment for slapping host Chris Rock.
The box-office haul is seen as positive for Sony Pictures (NYSE:SONY) and for what has been a disappointing summer movie season. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Fall Guy” struggled for movie attendance despite positive reviews.
The previous “Bad Boys” movie, “Bad Boys for Life,” netted $62.5 million in its opening weekend in January 2020. It was the highest-grossing film in North America that year, when the coronavirus pandemic resulted in theater closures, with $204 million in box-office sales.
Ticket sales are down 26% from last year and more than 40% from pre-pandemic totals, according to media-measurement company Comscore. Next weekend’s release of “Inside Out 2” from Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Pixar may prove to be a key test for summer season.
That allowed “If,” the Ryan Reynolds imaginary friend fantasy, to grab third place in its fourth weekend of release, bringing the Paramount Pictures cumulative domestic total to $93.5 million. Rounding out the top five was “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which added $5.4 million in its fifth weekend of release. It has grossed $150 million domestically and $360 million worldwide.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
