What Happened in Markets Today
Precious metals retreated. Silver rallied in European trading, rising above $50 per troy ounce for the first time since 1980. But precious metal prices fell sharply in U.S. trading on apparent profit-taking by traders, as well as the Israel-Gaza cease-fire. Gold fell 2.4% and silver dropped 3.7%.
Airline stocks rose after solid earnings from Delta. Delta Air Lines said it saw broad improvement in sales trends over the past six weeks and gave an upbeat forecast for the rest of the year, suggesting a strong holiday travel season. Delta rose 4.3% while United Airlines gained 3.3%.
