Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will likely end his independent presidential campaign and endorse Republican nominee Donald Trump, two sources familiar with the plans told NBC News.
Clarity on Kennedy’s plans are expected by the end of the week, with one of the sources saying the two campaigns are discussing a joint appearance.
Kennedy on Wednesday said he will give a campaign speech addressing his path forward, days after his running mate Nicole Shanahan said his campaign was weighing staying in the race or dropping out and backing Trump.
Kennedy’s team said he will hold an event in Phoenix on Friday, the same day that Trump is hosting an event in Glendale, a suburb in Phoenix.
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Trump’s running mate, said “there’s been a lot of communication back and forth” with Kennedy, but Trump wouldn’t promise a cabinet role for Kennedy’s endorsement. On Tuesday, Trump told CNN he would be open to Kennedy joining his administration.
Kennedy’s campaign has been fraught with challenges, including financial troubles and disqualification from the ballot in New York.
